EU Parliament Investigates PPWR Lobbying: a critical part of business or dated tactic?

Lobbying around the upcoming Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation is fierce.

From industry position papers, to LCAs, to following MEPs into the toilets to get their undivided attention – every part of the legislation has faced many opinions on what the final regs should look like and which pack formats should be targeted. A similar approach has been seen at COP and with the UNEP Plastics Treaty discussions.

A critical part of new legislation for all things sustainable is the seismic shift required to move from our current business-as-usual of exponential output and consumption, to a more managed and balanced approach.

In the year where businesses that will be impacted by sustainability regs reported record profits (fossil fuels, plastic bottles, single-use takeaway), the business case for a shift into a new system is being positioned as at odds with profitability. But is this really the case?

Although lobbying tends to carry a negative association to many, it can supply the evidence and data to support systemic change in realistic, yet ambitious, ways. It is critical that any good piece of legislation takes industry on a journey, utilising the best innovation to meet sustainability targets.
